Hands On
In sports, injuries can happen at any time. In 1979, while competing in the World Championships, Nadia accidently cut her wrist on a metal grip buckle. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was advised not to return to compete in the games. However, Nadia would not let anything stand in her way. She defied the doctors, went back to the competition, and won the first gold medal for her team.
Moscow Summer Olympics
With very little time on their hands, Nadia and Béla had to give it their all. For five, intense weeks, the duo trained nonstop in order to prepare for the upcoming competition. These Olympic Games, to be held in Moscow, would prove to be controversial. The United States, for example, refused to send a team to compete as a protest against the USSR’s involvement in Afghanistan. But an even larger problem loomed in the minds of the Russians– Nadia Comăneci.
