No Way Out
Afraid that Nadia too would defect and that they would lose their star athlete, the Romanian government instituted a travel ban for Nadia. Her phone calls and letters were screened and monitored. She had no privacy or freedom. The only time she was allowed to leave Romania was when she fly to Cuba and a couple European countries in order to compete.
Throwing In The Towel
Nadia made a bold move in 1984 when she decided to retire from gymnastics. But this decision didn’t mean that she was done with gymnastics altogether. Nadia went on to become a coach for the Romanian gymnastics team. This was going to bring her to a difficult place at future competitions.
