It wasn’t until 1987, while attending a party, that Nadia glimpsed her first chance at escape. She met a rather interesting man named Constantin Panait. He claimed to have defected to the United States from America. He also said he had become a US citizen. Little did Nadia know how much Panait—for better and for worse—would change her life.

Because Panait was able to produce his American citizenship, Nadia trusted him. Though it was risky, she decided to follow him and attempt to escape Romania. They managed it, in 1989, by first sneaking into Hungary, and then Austria. Finally, the duo made It all the way to America, actually flying through Canada first. Just weeks after they landed, the Romanian Revolution toppled the government.
