Just For 99 Cent
While it may seem counterintuitive that a photograph of inexpensive goods would fetch such a high price, Andreas Gursky’s 99 Cent is much more than a simple stock photo. The seemingly endless rows of stuff in a 99 Cents Only store in Los Angeles, with shoppers’ heads floating anonymously above the merchandise, more closely resemble abstract or Impressionist painting than contemporary photography in a single large-scale image digitally stitched together from multiple images.

It’s possible that this silhouette is the most famous one ever captured on camera. In 1984, while Jacobus “Co” Rentmeester was photographing Michael Jordan for LIFE, he captured the basketball superstar as he was flying through the air for a dunk, with his legs split like those of a ballet dancer and his left arm reaching to the stars.
