Where The Story Begins

While Chip and Joanna are known for their talents at flipping homes, they have a great love story as well! The two of them came from the same state and went to the same school for college. However, there had been three years between them when they went to school in Texas. They actually only met in 2001. When he saw a photo of her in her dad’s shop, he instantly felt drawn to the young woman in the image. It was a good thing that his hunch had been correct! Two years after that, they tied the knot. Even back then, they knew that they would build a family and a home with each other.

Too Small For Their Family

In 2012, Chip and Joanna bought a farmhouse together. It was a small place that came with an attic and only two bedrooms. This was much too tiny for them since there were seven people in the family. It was a good thing that they did not mind the size of the house! The truth is that they were more concerned with the size of the land. Among other things, they fell in love with the oak trees near the farmhouse. While they would have to spend some time fixing up the place, they did not mind. However, how would they turn a two-bedroom house into something big enough for seven people?

Longer Than They Expected

Back then, they had no idea how long the project was going to take. In the end, they spent 18 months on it! After all, they still had to set aside time to work on other properties for their clients. They found a lot of gems as they worked on renovating the farmhouse. Among other treasures, they found paperwork about the house from 1895! Even so, it was hard to determine just how old the house was. This only made Joanna fall even more in love with it. She adored the idea that it had its very own story.

Time To Move In

In October 2013, the family of seven was finally ready to move into the farmhouse. It took them an entire year and a half before they could do this. Joanna wanted to retain the original character of the farmhouse when they worked on its renovation. This was the reason they decided to add only one structure to it. The extension went on to become the master bedroom. While she did not want to change the house too much, she did a great job of beautifying it with the help of various fittings and fixtures.

Perfect From The Outside

When it came to the color scheme, they went with white and neutral colors. On her blog, Joanna talked about their choices for the home renovation. The couple was able to keep the exterior as classic and traditional as possible. They only gave it a white finish that would perfectly complement its wooden beams. On top of that, the oak trees that initially caught their eyes added even more appeal to the farmhouse! It looked very relaxing from the outside, but what about its interiors?

What The Interior Looks Like

The Gaines couple went with neutral colors inside the house to go with the exterior. There are gorgeous double doors that allow entry into a bright and roomy entrance hall. This room was decorated in white and grey. It was pretty obvious that the farmhouse was going to be beautiful. After all, Joanna has shown us just how talented she is. Her taste has always blown us away whenever we watch the show! She has taken the time to pick all of the things in the house with care, from the coat rack to the wall art.

Making The Design Flow

Chip and Joanna both knew that they had to make the interior design flow. They were careful not to fill it up to avoid making the space feel claustrophobic. This was the reason they knocked down a couple of walls and restructured the layout. The kitchen is one of the top-selling points of a house! They spent a lot of time and effort on enhancing the white ceiling and adding black accents for contrast. On top of that, they installed a breakfast bar that would allow the family to enjoy their meals together.

They Added A Lounge And Diner

On the other end of the room, the couple added a diner and a lounge. This multi-purpose space shows us how much thought they put into the layout of the house. They have a big dining table that can fit the entire family. Meanwhile, a comfy couch makes for a great spot to relax and unwind. The accessories in the house were all chosen to go with the design! It really looks like they thought everything through when they worked on this multi-purpose area. We did not expect anything less from Joanna, who also runs Magnolia Market. If you need home accessories and furnishings, you should check out the store!

A Place For Relaxation

When you take a close look at this lounge area, you are going to notice how relaxing this space is. This is important since we all need to take a break at some point in the day. They have five kids, so we bet that it is even tougher for them! The lounge might be super functional, but it has its own charms as well.

Adding Final Touches

All over the farmhouse, you are going to find various touches and details that they added to tie it all together. Among others, there were ornate lamps and a vase of flowers. You can buy these items at the Magnolia Market, which lets you shop both online and offline. We are so glad that Joanna has decided to share her skills with the rest of the world! This has made it so much easier to style our own homes.

Their Master Bedroom

Even though they only added one new structure to the farmhouse, they renovated and repaired the entire place to suit their needs. In the master bedroom, Joanna added old doors that would show off how classic the house is. She also transferred the original attic flooring here to retain the timeless charm of the farmhouse. But one of our favorite things in the room would have to be the gorgeous bed.

The Best Place To Relax

Joanna and Chip are busybodies, but this was to be expected. They work on their show and run a couple of businesses as well. We are sure that it is even more difficult since they have five kids at home! Even though they are busy people, they make sure to rest whenever they can. Once it is time for them to relax, they like to spend their free time in this room! During the winter, they also start fires in the fireplace that would ensure that the room is warm and snuggly.

Their En Suite Bathroom

The master bedroom comes with its very own bathroom, which is just as luxurious as the rest of the room. We especially admire the gorgeous touches and the free-standing tub. The bathroom door also works well as an accent piece. As you can see, Joanna knew what she was doing when she looked for old doors that they could use in the farmhouse. The lantern fixtures also added a touch of elegance!

A Closer Look

The bathroom in the master bedroom comes equipped with two sinks: his and hers. There is also a lovely chandelier and a huge bathtub. As you can see, the couple stuck to the neutral color scheme. If you ask us, this turned out to be the right choice because it only made the farmhouse seem even more cohesive. We are sure that this is another place that offers them relaxation after a busy day at work.

For The Girls

They have two daughters between them: Emmie Kay and Ella Rose. As loving parents, they wanted to ensure that they would craft the perfect room for their daughters. While most people would have used too much pink, Joanna stuck to the neutral color palette. The result was a mostly white room that came with gorgeous accent pieces. We love the dollhouse, which looks similar to their very own farmhouse.

For The Boys

Aside from the girls, they also have three boys. They welcomed Crew, the youngest in their brood, in June 2018. It is interesting to note that the kids follow a boy-girl-boy pattern. Drake is the eldest at 15 years old. Duke comes after Ella Rose at the age of 12. The boy’s room follows an adventure theme and comes with enough space to play in. There is an extra bed, which we take to mean that the couple is either thinking of having another boy. In the meantime, they could use it when a friend visits them.

An Adventure Theme

There are many things in their room that will keep the boys busy. In line with the adventure theme, there is a huge map on the wall. Aside from that, there are ladders that are more for fun than anything else. The parents used neutral colors for the rest of the house, and the boy’s room was not an exception to the rule. As you can see, Chip and Joanna wanted rooms that would be suitable for their young kids.

Family Above Anything Else

By now, you can see that Chip and Joanna worked hard to ensure that they would have a comfy and peaceful place to call home. On top of that, you can see their dedication to their family. If you follow Joanna on social media, we are sure that you already know this. On Instagram, she likes to post photos of the family, enjoying lovely moments. You will find a lot of photos showing Chip, Joanna, and the kids as they spend time together. The house also has a lot of family photos on the wall! We love the fact that they were done in black and white. It goes very well with the color scheme and the design of the house.

Time For Coffee

We love the stylish additions, but they also have a tendency to go for rather eccentric touches. Take a look at this coffee bar! With this, we doubt that Chip and Joanna go to coffee shops too often. This is a great way to show how much they like java. We bet that this also gives them the opportunity to spend some time with each other as they enjoy their drink. If you also like coffee, we bet that you would kill to have a stylish coffee bar. It does not only look good, but it is also fully stocked!

Crafts Room For The Kids

It goes without saying that their kids are also creative people! We are not surprised to hear that they wanted to make a craft room for the kids. This is the best place for everyone in the family to practice arts and crafts. It is found in the attic, which has proven to be ideal when it comes to inspiring them with their creative side! We are amazed that they would dedicate an entire room for such projects. Aside from that, it is the only place in the house that goes against the theme. We can see why this is the case.

Joanna Has Her Own Crafts Room

Did you really think that a single creative area would be enough for them? Aside from that crafts room for the kids, Joanna gets one of her own as well. We can see why she needs a lot of space. After all, she is working on a lot of big projects! Among others, she designs homes and creates ornaments that she sells on Magnolia Market. We are sure that she gets the ball rolling once she is in this gorgeous room.

Outside The Farmhouse

This is what the property looks like! The family likes to entertain guests and hold get-togethers in this area. It is perfect when it comes to hosting social gatherings or just spending family time. They have a fire pit and a repurposed barn. The dining set is charming and ideal for family brunches and outdoor meals. This is a great space that is just as elegant and full of character as the other parts of the house.

They Met Their Goals

The farmhouse rests on a property that spans 40 acres of land. The couple wants to plant trees and other plants on the land. On top of that, they are also thinking of raising animals on their property as well! It has since become an ideal farm with a silo and a chicken coop. The plan was to fill up these things sooner than later. In our opinion, they did an excellent job of sticking to the traditional look as they had planned. On top of that, the exterior also went well with the natural beauty of the surroundings.

The Greenhouse On The Property

There is a greenhouse outside the farmhouse. It is easily one of the most attractive features on the property. This allows the family to grow anything that they want regardless of the season. The couple has the opportunity to grow their favorite herbs and plants here. On top of that, it is a great way to teach the kids more about plants as well! We bet that they teach the kids how important vegetation is.

Spending Time On The Porch

We bet that the Gaines family likes to spend warm evenings on the porch. Look at how lovely it is. This part of the house follows the original style of the house. Look at the photo below, which shows Joanna with little Crew. It is safe to assume that she spends a lot of time admiring how gorgeous their yard is!

Wise Words On The Walls

The couple also decided to put wise words on the walls as a decorative piece. This is a great way to show us their beliefs and thoughts. In the entrance hall, there is a décor that explains the philosophy that they used when they built their home. We love how much personality goes into each and every single part of the house! This would not have happened if they did not put in a lot of effort and hard work.

Enough Space For The Entire Family

It is easy to see just how much family means to both Chip and Joanna. We are blown away to think that they have managed to turn a shabby and tiny farmhouse into a gorgeous family home. They made sure to personalize the entire space so that it would be perfect for the family. The couple deserves major props for what they have achieved! No doubt, this is the best place to raise their five kids.

WorkSpaces All Over The House

A lot of us work from home. With the pandemic, this has even become the norm. Chip and Joanna do not have any problems when it comes to this since they made sure to add desks all over the house. This is a good idea because they can work anytime, anywhere. They might have added a lot of work spots, but this does not make the house look less roomy. The farmhouse is both functional and gorgeous!

The Original Fireplace Is Intact

Everyone knows that Texas gets warm and balmy in the summer, but the winters can also be very harsh. It is a good thing that Chip and Joanna have planned ahead! They kept the original fireplace in good condition and even added charming details to it. We love how stunning and rustic it now looks.

They Have The Ideal Garden

They might already have the greenhouse, but Joanna also has a garden. Aside from creative projects, it looks like the family also likes to do outdoorsy things! The garden was designed to enhance the natural beauty of the land. We are glad to report that it is doing a great job at it. Chip and Joanna also installed a fence to ensure that no wild animals would come in to ruin the plants or harm the kids.

The Perfect Kitchen

The kitchen of the farmhouse is also a work of art! It does not just look gorgeous but also has everything that you will need in this part of the house. As expected, this room was decorated to jive with the rest of the house. There is a sign that says “supermarket,” which is a good way to spice things up. It must be pleasant to whip up a meal over here! We really can’t find anything that looks out of place in this photo.

Everything In Its Proper Place

It is amazing to see how organized the family is. Chip and Joanna ensured that there is a place to put everything that they needed. If you ever feel like your house is too cluttered, this might be what you need. We are sure that they always remind the kids about the value of organization and cleanliness. We can only wish that our house looked like this! As you can see, the couple really thought everything out.

Enough Room For Playtime

As the parents of five kids, it is important that there is enough room for playtime. We are glad to see that Chip and Joanna did not forget about this. Take a look at this photo of the boys building card houses on the stairs. This is proof that the couple encourages their creativity! We are glad that they have provided the children with enough space to let their imaginations run wild.

Comfy Reading Nooks

The couple has planned the entire house with care. This photo shows how they have taken advantage of all the parts of the house. Joanna and Chip even transformed a space like this into a reading nook! They added several pillows there to ensure that it is going to be conducive and comfortable at the same time. Here is one of the boys taking advantage of this space! We would love to curl up here with a book.

This Is The Same House

This is a before and after comparison of the farmhouse. After seeing the difference, it is hard to believe that this is the same place! Chip and Joanna had a vision in mind when they started working on the old property. In the end, all of their hard work had been worth it. In the end, they managed to surprise everyone with the final product. We are glad to hear that this is the case. It took them a fairly long time, but things worked out in the end. The entire Gaines family finally gets to live in their beautiful home!

The Finished Product

Once the renovation was finished, the Gaines family moved into the farmhouse. It is now the place that they call home. Chip and Joanna somehow transformed an old house into a warm and cozy place! The design is amazing because everything goes so well together. Everything flows and makes the space look even more comfortable. We already knew that they were talented, but this is something else altogether. Fortunately, all the time and dedication they put into the project had been worth it.

What The Future Holds

At the moment, there are seven people in the Gaines family. We wonder if Chip and Joanna are planning to have even more kids. Do you think that they would sell the property if ever that happens? Just so you know, they have claimed to be happy with their lifestyle and have no plans to sell the house. They want the kids to grow up here. We are glad to hear that the kids also adore the gorgeous farmhouse! On top of that, we are sure that they are having the best childhoods in the farmhouse and on the sprawling property.
