Aren’t They Dangerous?
But, most importantly, aren’t sting rays dangerous? According to Helen Cadwallader, a Ph.D. student who has studied stingrays and is also a researcher at the University of Waikato, humans should avoid approaching stingrays at all costs.
They Can Be Fatal
When stung by a stingray, you’ll feel immediate, severe pain at the wound site. It’s possible to have a life-threatening allergic reaction to stingray venom, which requires emergency medical care. Expect the area to swell. Hot water kills stingray venom and may relieve the pain associated with the sting. “Stingrays have a spine on their tail that can cause extreme pain and a lot of damage, but they won’t attack,” said Cadwalleder, explaining that “they don’t go out to chase you down and attack, what they do is entirely self-defense.”
