Perhaps you remembered that the characters were receiving messages in a Packard Bell AM radio. To make the scenes realistic, they added an antenna because it would make you believe that they were receiving distant radio transmissions. That radio in reality did not have any antenna, nor a handle.

We saw in the series that the characters have made technology from the scraps that they found. This was a real challenge for the show’s prop team. They often needed to come up with something new from the random scraps that the characters found. Imagine macgyvering, but way before that.
