Knife Hands
If you do not know what the knife hand is, this is what happens when you lock your fingers together to form a flat slash with your palm. This is typically used when showing someone directions. It is a respectful but demonstrative way to do so, which is why it is not surprising to hear soldiers take it with them to civilian life.
