Soldiers eventually learn to do it without thinking about it. In fact, it becomes so comfortable for them that they will keep doing it even after re-entering civilian life.

Sir And Ma’am
Respect is an incredibly important aspect of military life. Soldiers have learned to treat everyone with the utmost respect during their time in the military. Regardless of class and status, they will refer to men as ‘sir’ and women as ‘ma’am’.
