Aside from the IPAWS message being broadcast, the Blount County community also got wind of what was happening because the news was circulated through the smartphone application Next Door, which provides a somewhat private social network for a neighborhood.

Some people could not actively help the search, but they rallied around and did whatever they could. A local search volunteer told WVLT News this: “We’re a very tight community. We try to help everyone.”
