The Sea of Galilee, a large freshwater lake more than 30 miles long, is located in the Jordan Rift Valley in northeast Israel. A large settlement once stood on a hill to the east of the water. The city was established sometime in the first century A.D., and the Romans called it Antiochia-Hippos, while the region’s Aramaic speakers called it Sussita.

The Roman province of Palaestina then annexed hippos in the second century A.D. The city started to prosper from that point forward. Its streets were soon transformed into grand boulevards lined with Egyptian marble, and advanced water infrastructure was installed to serve the city’s growing population.
