Richard and Karen were born to Harold Bertram Carpenter and Agnes Reuwer. When the siblings were young, Richard preferred spending time indoors playing the piano and listening to classical music, whereas Karen liked playing outdoor sports together with her friends. Their parents, however, noticed that both their children were greatly interested in music in spite of their differences.
