Photography’s finest moments are those in which it freezes in time the hope, anguish, wonder, and joy of living. When LIFE magazine first started, Alfred Eisenstaedt was one of four photographers hired with the goal “to find and catch the storytelling moment.” When World War II finally ended on August 14, 1945, he didn’t have to go very far to find it. Eisenstaedt wandered the streets of New York City, taking in the atmosphere, and soon found himself in the jubilant tumult of Times Square.
