Being bored can serve as a powerful motivator. In 1997, Philippe Kahn was bored out of his mind while he was sequestered in a maternity ward in Northern California. During the delivery of their daughter, Sophie, the business owner of a software company was asked to leave the room by his wife. As a result, Kahn, who had been experimenting with technologies that allow for the instantaneous sharing of images, hacked together a device that enabled him to send a picture of his newborn child to his friends and family in real-time.
