A Mixed Reception
Nadia’s arrival in the United States made big news, understandably. Word quickly spread as journalists hounded the young Olympic star, hungry for answers to their questions such as, “what are your plans now?” Always cool under pressure, Nadia answered with a smile and a little broken English. Though some Americans were less than happy with her arrival, due to some negative rumors being spread around, most of the country was thrilled to have her.

As soon as Béla Károlyi got word that Nadia had made it to America, he reached out to her, trying to get in contact with her. And he was not the only one. In fact, many people were trying to contact her, but none of them were getting a response. Why was Nadia not returning their calls? Because she was not getting them. Constantin Panait was intercepting them, and making sure Nadia never heard about them.
