Even though he had a wife, Panait and Nadia often stayed together in motels and hotels. When the press questioned her, she only said, “It’s a secret,” and stuck out her tongue. It was not until Nadia was on a visit to Canada that she was able to get help. While on vacation, she ran into her friend, Alexandru Stefu, who questioned her about her strange behavior surrounding Panait. She opened up and confessed that Panait had been holding her against her will. Furious, Stefu decided to confront Panait, who ran off at the first sign of trouble. He fled the country with a sizable portion of Nadia’s money. However, despite the way he treated her, Nadia is still grateful for Panait helping her get to America.
