Young Talent
One day, while in kindergarten, six-year old Nadia did cartwheels on the playground with one of her school friends. While the two were lost in play, they failed to notice the adults watching them. They turned out to be Márta and Béla Károlyi, a married couple who just happened to be gymnastic coaches. They were at the playground to scout for young talent. The couple followed Nadia and her friend from classroom to classroom in the hopes of getting them to join their gym.

A lifelong sports fan, Béla Károlyi got his start as a hammer-thrower, eventually going on to become a champion in the sport. Then, he made the switch to coaching, starting off with junior boxing. It was not until he met his wife, Márta Károlyi, that he got involved in gymnastics. The two routinely scouted for young talent just like Nadia.
