Duo
In 1967, Jacobs left the group to be part of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Months later, Richard and Karen started performing as a duo called the “Carpenters.” The two recorded demos, which they later sent to A&M records. At about the same time, the duo also did a performance in the ‘’All American College Show.” Luckily, in 1969, A&M Records signed the pair for the unique sound they had.

Freedom
A&M opened a lot of doors for the pair and gave them plenty of creative freedom. The duo was able to compose music and lyrics that were their very own. Richard was particularly thrilled since he was doing the composing for the two. It was not long before they started working on an album.
