By 1972, the Carpenters had already become international stars. The duo received an invitation from the White House, and they met Ronald Zeigler, Ken Cole, and James Cavanagh! Later that same year, the duo was requested to come back in order to meet President Richard Nixon himself in none other than the Oval Office. The memorable meeting was documented with photographs.

In the beginning, the duo signed as “Carpenters” and not “The Carpenters.” Many people did not know this but in actual fact, the pair have been miscalled the whole time. However, what made them even decide on the name? Actually, the duo thought that dropping the article was hip at that time. Bands such as Buffalo Springfield and Jefferson Airplane did the same thing, after all!
