The New Girl
When Nadia went with her country’s team to the 1984 Olympic Games, she was in for a shocking surprise. Across the mats she saw her former coach, Béla Károlyi. Béla was now working as a gymnastics coach for the U.S. team, and he had Mary Lou Retton, his impressive new protégé. Even though it hurt Nadia to see him, she knew that he had only done what was best for him.
Mary Lou Retton
Born on January 24th, 1968, Mary Lou Retton had grown a passion for gymnastics, and she attributed that passion to Nadia Comaenci’s performance at the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976. When she heard that Nadia’s former coaches, Márta and Béla Károlyi were living in Houston, Texas, she moved there to be trained by them.
