Soon her training with the Károlyi couple proved to pay off. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, she became the first female from outside of Eastern Europe to win the individual all-around gold. Incredibly, it was Romania’s Ecaterina Szabo who she was up against at the competition.
Keeping Distance
Nadia couldn’t keep her eyes off the American group at the Olympic Games. It wasn’t Mary Lou Retton that was tearing her heart up, it was Béla, her former coach. Nadia was given strict orders that she was not to talk to him at all. Nadia was suffering, and she felt that she needed to get out of Romania.
